The Cause and the Cure
There are numerous reasons why a dog might like to jump. A dog may jump up when you come home to get closer to your face. A sniff to the face is something dogs usually do when they meet. To test this, try getting face-level with your dog.
You may not realise it, but you dog may be jumping because yuou trained him to. You may be reinforcing the act when you get excited when he jumpes up. Any kind of attention to the behavior, good or bad, can reinforce the jumping behavior in your dog.

If you want to keep your dog from jumping, you will need to train consistently to re-wire his thinking. Here’s a few tips. Don’t make coming home an exciting event. Ignore any jumping, don’t give any attention to the behavior until he stops jumping. Ask any guests in your home to do the same.
Something that may also help is to make it so that your dog can reach your face without having to jump.
A great trick to keep your dog from jumping is to ignore the behavior. Once he’s calmed down, you can lavish him in praise. Somthing else that may work is to push your dog away by his nose when he jumps. It won’t take long for your dog to get the picture.
Other Important Things
Something else that you should do is teach your dog to sit. Your dog should learn this before just about anything else. Tell him to sit as soon as he jumps. Problem solved.
After your dog has learned to sit, you should work on teaching him “off.” Use this command in the same way you would use the sit command.
The secret that cause many people to fail at stopping their dog from jumping is consistency. Keep at it and you can stop your dog from jumping.
