It’s perfectly normal for a puppy or dog to growl when you play tug of war with him. However, it’s also a sign of aggression and can be a sign the dog may bite – so be careful!
You need to know if the growling is appropriate or inappropriate. If your puppy or dog is eating or chewing on a favorite toy and growls when you come near, that isn’t behavior you should allow. Your dog is being aggressive.
If the growling starts with no obvious reason, a visit to the vet is called for to to ascertain if there is a medical cause.
Growling can be a warning that your dog is being dominant over you. So, the next thing you check is that you position yourself as the leader of the pack in your home. Once these dominance issues are solved,many other problems will disappear.
To position yourself as the alpha dog or pack leader, the NILIF (Nothing In Life Is Free) approach should be taken up. This method means that you ask your dog to do something before you give him anything. This includes that you must not allow your dog to demand your attention. If you permit him to demand attention, you have lost dominance. Just ignore him if he tries to demand attention. You choose when to give him attention. He may try harder but you must not give in or all you have gained is lost.

With NILIF everyone in the home needs to be consistent and persistent.
So, for example, you ask your dog to sit and wait patiently before you set his food down or before take him out for a walk. Don’t allow your dog to offer a behavior before you ask for it – that doesn’t count.
Make sure that when leaving the house, you walk through the door first. Eat a small biscuit before you set your dog’s meal down, so that he sees you eating first. You are only required to repeat this for two weeks to set yourself as the pack leader.
All members of your family need to engage in this process to position them higher up in the hierarchy than your puppy or dog.
The alpha dog sleeps on higher ground, so do not permit your dog to rest on your bed if you want to be the dominant one.
You should do consistent training in obedience with your puppy or dog. Make the training sessions short and fun. This will start you on the path to a better behaved dog.
