Here’s some advice for choosing a dog training school. A skilled and professional trainer will enjoy the job and not use any technique that causes pain or harm. Don’t be surprised if you (and the rest of your family) are encouraged to join the class. People sometimes need a little “training”, too.

You should be invited to observe a class before deciding to enroll. The class room should be large and spacious. Preferable training spots are gymnasium-sized rooms or a large fenced-in lot. The dogs and people should look like they are enjoying themselves. If the instructor seems frustrated or impatient, choose a different program.

When you are choosing a dog training school, find out what lessons will be taught and when. There should be a curriculum of study, from beginner to more advanced levels. Puppies should be trained separately from adult dogs.

A good trainer will teach you how to train your dog, because you will need to practice these skills at home. You should be comfortable about asking questions and able to communicate well with the trainer or trainers.

Check to see if the trainer is a member of any professional organizations, such as the APDT. Ask if he or she participates in continuing education programs. There are new innovations in this field, as there are in other professions.

Ask for references. Remember that you are hiring this person to help you train your pet. Interview them in the same way that you would interview a potential employee.

If the classes are conducted in a group, rather than an individual setting, you should be sure that the school requires proof of vaccinations. Check with your vet about what vaccinations are required when dogs are around other dogs. Your vet may be able to help in other ways when it comes to choosing a dog training school. Most are familiar with the options in your neighborhood.

Although a trainer cannot (and should not) guarantee that you and your pet will be successful, because of variables that include breed, temperament and owner commitment, he or she should be willing to guarantee that you will be satisfied with the services. Most trainers believe that any dog, regardless of age, can be trained to follow basic commands, but success requires your involvement.

When you are choosing a dog training school, think about your own dog’s temperament. If he is not friendly with other dogs and people, you will need to enrol in “private” lessons.
