Bark Control Collar FAQ
Saturday, May 16th, 2009    Subscribe To Our FeedA bark control collar can be utilized as a safe and effective training implement for eliminating your dog’s annoying or persistent barking. Following are the top three points I’m asked to clarify from pet owners interested in learning more about bark collars and how they work.
Are bark collars humane?
There has been a lot of debate about the humaneness of using a bark control collar. In my view, anti bark collars are very humane.
There are many different varieties of bark collars (Aboistop and Citronella collars, Ultrasonic Devices and Static Correction Bark Collars). For the scope of this article, I’ll center on shock collars since the majority of controversy about safety and humaneness will often concentrate on this variety.
Static collars work by delivering a harmless static shock to admonish your dog when she begins barking. Some collars sense barking by using a vibration sensor, some bark collars utilize a microphone to identify barking by sound; many collars use a combination of vibration and sound.
The static correction received is akin to the shock you get when you scuff across a carpeted floor in your stocking feet and then come in contact with a metal object. You have probably experienced this when you pull your clothing out of the clothes dryer during the wintertime and they have “static cling”. Startling? Yes. Painful? No.
When used properly, along with consistent training, static correction bark collars can be a safe, harmless tool to stop unreasonable or nuisance barking.

What type of bark collar works best?
There are some things you should think about to determine the answer. As a pet owner, you know your dog best. Some things to think about when purchasing a no bark collar:
- Your dog’s age: Bark collars or remote dog trainers should not be used on a dog younger than 6 months old.
- Your dog’s size & weight: Your dog’s weight and collar size should be considered when looking at collars. A bark collar for little dogs won’t work well for a large or stubborn dog.
- Your dog’s temperament: Is your dog extremely stubborn? Shy and fearful? There are bark collars designed for both of these extremes, as well as standard collars that will work with most dogs. An extremely timid dog may respond better to a Spray Bark Collar or Ultrasonic system. Likewise, a larger dog will in all likelihood be trained easier with a shock collar especially created for big dogs.
Will a bark collar work on my dog?
The degree of success for bark collars is good, but its important to realize that they may not help in every situation. One way to help promote success is to make a commitment to consistent training. Opt for the bark control collar that fits best with your dog’s temperament and size, use consistent teaching, and you’ll soon be enjoying bark free days.
